1. Introduction

Welcome to Folio ("Folio", "the App", "we", "us", or "our"). These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the Folio mobile application, operated by LogicLine LLC, a Delaware limited liability company. By downloading, installing, or using Folio, you agree to be bound by these Terms.

2. Description of Service

Folio is a peer-reviewed medical literature reader for iOS. The App provides:

  • A daily editorial feed of peer-reviewed papers from PubMed / MEDLINE, organized by user-selected medical specialties.
  • Relevance scoring based on the NIH iCite Relative Citation Ratio (RCR), SCImago Journal Rank (SJR), and recency.
  • Native rendering of Open Access full text (CC-BY, CC-BY-NC, CC0) sourced from Europe PMC structured XML.
  • Full PubMed search, Read Later, Collections, and Saved Searches.
  • RIS export for use with reference managers such as Zotero, Mendeley, EndNote, and Papers.

3. Eligibility

  • You must be at least 13 years old to use Folio.
  • You must have the legal authority to bind yourself to these Terms.
  • Folio is rated 12+ and is intended for medical professionals, trainees, and adult readers.

4. No Account Required

Folio does not require an account, sign-in, or registration. Your reading data, saved papers, and preferences are stored locally on your device.

5. Acceptable Use

You agree to use Folio only for lawful purposes. You agree not to:

  • Reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the App.
  • Use bots, scrapers, or automated tools to interact with the App or our backend infrastructure.
  • Attempt to overload, disrupt, or impair the App's services or our servers.
  • Use the App to redistribute paywalled article content in violation of publisher copyright.
  • Bypass or attempt to bypass any rate limits, subscription gates, or technical protection measures.

6. Subscription and Pricing

Folio offers a free tier with limited Read Later, Collections, and Saved Searches capacity, and a Folio Pro subscription that removes those caps. Folio Pro is offered as a monthly or annual subscription, billed through Apple's App Store. Free trials may be offered at our discretion. Subscriptions auto-renew unless cancelled. You can manage and cancel your subscription through your Apple ID subscription settings.

7. Open Access Content

Folio renders Open Access articles natively when their license permits. Each article displays its license (CC-BY, CC-BY-NC, CC0, or other), the original journal, and a link to the publisher's record. Folio does not modify scholarly content. Attribution is preserved. If a publisher or author requests removal of any specific OA content from the native reader, we will comply on a case-by-case basis. Folio is not affiliated with or endorsed by any journal, publisher, NIH, NLM, Europe PMC, Unpaywall, Crossref, or SCImago.

8. Intellectual Property

"Folio" and the Folio app design, layout, code, and visual assets are the property of LogicLine LLC. Article content, abstracts, metadata, and full text remain the intellectual property of their respective authors and publishers, and are surfaced under their original licensing terms. You may use Folio for personal and professional reading; commercial redistribution of article content through Folio is not permitted.

9. Third-Party Services

  • Apple StoreKit (subscription billing).
  • Supabase (Folio backend hosting daily-refreshed paper metadata).
  • RevenueCat (subscription state management; receives only an anonymous app user identifier).
  • PubMed E-utilities, NIH iCite, Unpaywall, Europe PMC, Crossref (open scientific data sources).

The use of these services by Folio does not imply endorsement by, or affiliation with, those services.

10. Medical Disclaimer

FOLIO IS A READER FOR MEDICAL LITERATURE. IT IS NOT A MEDICAL DEVICE. IT DOES NOT PROVIDE MEDICAL ADVICE, DIAGNOSIS, OR TREATMENT. FOLIO IS NOT INTENDED TO REPLACE PROFESSIONAL CLINICAL JUDGEMENT. RELEVANCE SCORING AND ANY READING-ASSIST FEATURES ARE INFORMATIONAL ONLY AND DO NOT CONSTITUTE A RECOMMENDATION FOR PATIENT CARE. ALWAYS CONSULT A QUALIFIED HEALTHCARE PROVIDER FOR CLINICAL DECISIONS.

11. Disclaimers

FOLIO IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE", WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, OR NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE APP WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, ERROR-FREE, OR THAT ARTICLE METADATA WILL ALWAYS BE COMPLETE OR CURRENT.

12. Limitation of Liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM ARISING FROM OR RELATED TO THE APP IS LIMITED TO THE GREATER OF (A) THE AMOUNT YOU PAID FOR FOLIO PRO IN THE TWELVE MONTHS PRECEDING THE CLAIM, OR (B) ONE HUNDRED U.S. DOLLARS ($100). WE WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES.

13. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless LogicLine LLC and its officers, employees, and contractors from any claims, damages, liabilities, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising from your use of Folio or your violation of these Terms.

14. Termination

You may stop using Folio at any time by deleting the App from your device. We may suspend or terminate your access to Folio if you violate these Terms, abuse our backend infrastructure, or engage in fraudulent activity. We may also discontinue the App or any feature at any time, with or without notice.

15. Changes to These Terms

We may modify these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by an updated "Last Updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of the App after a change constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.

16. Governing Law and Dispute Resolution

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Delaware, United States, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. Any dispute arising from or related to these Terms or your use of Folio shall be resolved through binding arbitration administered by the American Arbitration Association (AAA) under its Consumer Arbitration Rules. You waive any right to participate in a class action or class-wide arbitration.

17. General Provisions

Entire Agreement. These Terms and the Privacy Policy constitute the entire agreement between you and LogicLine LLC regarding Folio.

Severability. If any provision is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain in effect.

Waiver. Our failure to enforce any provision is not a waiver of our right to enforce it later.

Assignment. You may not assign these Terms; we may assign them in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets.

Force Majeure. We are not liable for delays or failures resulting from causes beyond our reasonable control.
